James Chapman

James joined Thaliwal & Veja in November 2021 and has ongoing involvement in section 21A and section 16 applications. He has a particular interest in cases where ‘P’ is a young person and the sourcing of a long-term place of residence for that person is complex, and in some cases, contentious. He also works on cases involving people with complex care needs and he has previously worked on contentious cases involving funding disputes and capacity-based issues. His background of working with young people throughout his time at university enables him to work effectively with clients and to ensure that their participation in proceedings is achieved to its maximum – which is pivotal to Court of Protection proceedings.

James grew up in Leicester, attending Beaumont Leys School and QE College to complete his GCSE’s and A-Levels respectively. He completed his Law Degree at Nottingham Trent University, achieving a 2:1, and he achieved a very competent grade on the Barristers Training Course at Nottingham Law School. He was subsequently called to the bar of England and Wales by The Honourable Society of the Middle Temple in 2021. He also completed an LLM Masters in Law, while working with us, achieving a Distinction grade.

James has worked with over 100 A-Level students on the Sutton Trust Pathways to Law programme, having completed the course as a student himself in 2017. He has also spent time working with students throughout the Midlands as an Outreach Ambassador. James continues to offer support to Nottingham Trent University’s outreach programmes in his spare time and more recently, he has started to work with students at Beaumont Leys school as an alumni. His aim is to inspire the next generation of lawyers and to help young people to understand and appreciate that university and a career in law is achievable for anyone.

James is an avid fan of Leicester City Football Club and he is a keen supporter of Formula One. He also plays football in his spare time and every year, he will visit his family in the Lake District to take in the natural beauty that the Lakes have to offer in abundance. Prior to the pandemic, he climbed his first mountain and he is planning on climbing Skiddaw’s 931 metre summit in 2024.
